Fundraising - Quick, Cheap & Easy

Schools are always looking for ways to raise money, and the usual method is to sell a product. Obviously, selling a product is easier than selling air, so the product is what we'll explore here. If you buy something for $5 and re-sell it for a fundraiser, you end up selling it for $8, $10 or even more, since you need to pay for the product AND still make money. Is that product really worth that much or are you just trying to raise money? The most important question is WHY are people buying the product - for the cause or for the product? When people are committed to a cause, they don't need expensive products to buy, they just need a reason to buy. Here are some ways to raise money with little to no startup costs, provided you have a reason for people to donate.

Minimum GPA vs. Maximum Standards

A common struggle with Honor/Junior Honor Society groups is what GPA to establish as a minimum for membership. For charter members of NHS and NJHS, a 3.0 GPA minimum (or equivalent... see handbook for more details) is required. Local chapters can then adjust through their bylaws a higher standard if desired. There are a variety of reasons that cause schools to adjust their GPA. Some will take a higher GPA since it matches their graduation honors' system, or for schools that see a high percentage of students with stellar GPA's, they may increase the minimum to manage the size of the chapter. Whatever a school's reason is, the adjusted GPA must be part of their local bylaws.

Recognizing the BEST!

By: Codie Tucker, Comstock High School NHS Student, MAHS Board of Delegates 2007-2008

How are you able to recognize both the graduating members as well as the teachers in your district? What about a dinner with both the graduating members of your chapter/council and a teacher of their choice?  This does not mean that the adviser is stuck putting together this whole dinner. In fact, they are just responsible for guiding the juniors, who are responsible for making the whole night come together.

GO TO CONTEST RULES!

Regionals Are Coming!

We have 9 total Regional Conferences this year! (The 9th one isn't until April though, and it's for Middle Schools ONLY.) For all the rest, you can take a look at dates/locations and get your presenters moving.

Presentations must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the Regional you want to attend.

Attendee registrations must be completed at least 1 week before the Regional you want to attend.

The only way for students to fully understand what leadership entails is to practice it. They’ve  completed a number of successes and failures and now we’re giving them a chance to share with other schools. Presentations are created by students for these one-day conferences (9am–1pm). Advisers will be asked to sit in on sessions and help evaluate presentations/presenters. Each Regional site has a volunteer host school that is responsible for hospitality, the presenters’ schedule, coordinating room moderators, and more. The host school adviser will be asked to remain in a room set aside for advisers and guide interested advisers in discussion, problem solving, and idea sharing.

** Still looking for host schools for Feb. 19 (GVSU), Feb. 25 (LCC West), March 4 (Treetops, Gaylord), and April 28 (Bavarian Inn). Find out what hosting entails... then email Kadi Pojeta if you're interested!
